About SMD

A tradesman's business, built on doing the job properly.

SMD Building & Joinery is run by Steven Dawe, who's spent thirty years on tools across South Manchester — from roofing and full extensions to the kind of bespoke joinery that doesn't get rushed. The business takes on all construction work, indoor and outdoor, and still does the detailed, made-to-fit woodwork by hand.

Based in Stretford and working right across Trafford, every job — big extension or small fitted piece — gets the same standard of finish.

Free, no-obligation quotes

  • Our local patch: Stretford, Trafford and the surrounding South Manchester area.
  • Getting a feel for the job: Send photos or a description and we'll give you a quote — free, no obligation, no charge, ever. If the job turns out bigger once we're on site (more structural work, extra clearing, that sort of thing), we'll have a quick chat and agree a fair price together before anything starts.
  • Quotes are held for 30 days from the date they're given.

Helping us do a great job

  • Easy access: gates unlocked and paths clear so materials, tools and, where needed, scaffolding or skips can get through safely.
  • Power & water: for larger builds we may need access to an outdoor power point and tap.
  • Site quirks: let us know about hidden pipework, cables, loose brickwork or anything structural so we can plan around it safely.
  • Pets & little ones: just flag any pets or children around the site so the team can work safely.

Payments & schedule changes

  • Larger jobs: extensions, garden rooms and roofing may need a deposit to cover materials, with the balance due on completion.
  • Smaller jobs: cash or bank transfer on the day, once the work's done.
  • Changing plans: we know life gets busy — 24 hours' notice lets us fill the slot. Cancellations under 24 hours may carry a 50% charge to cover the team's time.
  • Manchester weather: outdoor work (roofing, decking, fencing, flagging) may need to move to a drier day if conditions turn. We'll always give as much notice as we can.

Total peace of mind

  • Workmanship guarantee: every job carries a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship — if something's not right because of how it was built, we'll put it right.
  • Fully covered: backed by full Public Liability Insurance for your complete reassurance.
  • Pre-existing wear: we treat every property with care, but can't be held responsible for issues with structures, fixtures or materials already worn or fragile before we start (old loose brickwork or rotten timber uncovered mid-job, for example).
